Manchester Airport Community Trust Fund
A tennis club has netted £1,500 thanks to Manchester Airports Community Trust Fund.
Dunham Massey Lawn Tennis Club was awarded the cash, which will go towards a new petrol mower.
The club has been centre of village and community activities for nearly 100 years, although the village ahll now also provides a facility for functions.
Founded in 1920 and originally part of the Dunham Massey Men's Institute, a plot of land was bequeathed by the Late Lord Stamdord for the benefit of the community.
Villagers cleared the land, which was formerly a copse, and laid the tennis courts.
The pavillion was built by the villagers in 1938.
The club has always been run by a committee made up of volunteers, who maintain the grounds and pavillion and also raise any additional funds through local events.
Over the last few years, a coaching session for children has become popular/ The club has introduced a children's membership fee to encourage growth in membership and they now hold an annyal tournament for the youngsters.
Susan Bailey, the organisation's marking officer, said: "Over the years, there has been only a low level of maintenance of existing facilities due to lack of funds and consequently, the grass courts, grounds, equipment and pavillion are deteriorating to such a level that a major upgrade is required."
"With this grant, we are able to maintain a high standard of ground all year round."
The Manchester Airport Community Trust Fund is a registered chairty and was established to promote, enhance, improve and protect both the natural and built enviroments in our local community. The trustees award grants of up to £3,000 to projects that are eligible.
